If this pic is any indication, the show is already one step ahead of the Keanu Reeves movie.

holy crap, they're actually making him look like the comic book character. I applaud the decision.
I also applaud the fact that the smoke seems to be coming from his crotch.

Yeah, too bad that's the exception rather than the rule these days. As for the smoky crotch, I guess someone got confused when told John Constantine was a chain smoker.

awesome! i'll definitely watch this! i was a huge fan of the character, not so much the series if that makes any sense. it always seemed like he was a better back up character in swamp thing. the movie was horrible, it might actually work better as a TV series.
ps. Hold Me is one of my favorite single issue stories of all time.

I loved the comic book in the early days right up to the Mike Carey era, when it was more about the supernatural and Constantine besting gods and demons through cunning and sheer luck. I dropped the series during the latter parts when they started focusing too much on Constantine being old and banging a goth chick young enough to be his daughter.

I used to follow the series pretty regularly, too. Not sure why I quit reading.

I have a feeling this is going to be Must See TV for me. It looks better than the movie anyways...

I may be in the minority because I actually like Keannu's Constantine movie (it was an awful adaptation of the comic, but it was a decent action film and the lead role didn't need to show a wide range of emotions so Reaves kinda looked good in it) but the trailer for the TV show was all sorts of awesome, I'm willing to start hating on the Reaves film if that's what it takes to make the TV series happen. It looks like a proper live-action version of Constantine from the comic books. Although I imagined that Constantine would have a much deeper, more gruff voice due to the damage he's done to his throat.
I read that the TV series won't portray him as a chain smoker, though-something about the network execs not wanting to show bad habits in a tv series (that shouldn't be watched by impressionable kids anyway) I'm curious how that will affect the storylines because a large chunk of Constantine's character and stories in the comics had something to do with his addiction to silk cuts. It's probably more vital to his character than the trenchcoat.

Heh. Maybe they could work out a nice product placement deal with Silk Cuts.

Heh. Maybe they could work out a nice product placement deal with Silk Cuts. Or they could play it up like he's always on edge and nicking for a cig, seeing adds and billboards for Silk Cut in every other scene.

The whole thing about Constantine is that he's a flawed individual. If they don't have him doing things like smoke and drink, how are they supposed to play him as one?

I don't see why they wouldn't -- especially if it's "part of this character".
On The Following -- they showed the main character dealing with a drinking problem. It wasn't constant...but they showed it. I don't think Fox is "scared" to show it...maybe they don't see that aspect of the character as being overly important?
Who knows...it might turn out to be a false rumor...about not including it that is.

Anyone see the second trailer yet? It clearly shows the Helm of Nabu -- the golden helmet that Doctor Fate wears -- at 0:48. Nice. Very nice.

Watched the pilot last night. I'm glad they're actually shooting for something much closer to the source material. All the main characters are there in some form or another (although I'm wondering what's the deal with Chas surviving being impaled in the chest. Maybe they're going to reveal that he's a ghoul or somehow immortal later on.) Even the helm of nabu made a cameo. It's definitely going to be part of my weekly watch list. I just have a few minor complaints:
- maybe it's because I'm familiar with the comics already, but it looked like they were rushing through the story. It's just the pilot episode and they've already revealed plot points that were only tackled in the comic books after several dozen issues.
- the effects are too flashy. They look good for a TV series, but I dunno. Kinda makes the story more action than horror, with explosions and earthquakes and fire pillars. It's like a Michael Bay version of a horror film. It could have benefited from a more subtle approach to the demons and ghosts. It's not like they're avoiding a gloomy tone because they are trying to market to kids - the first half of the episode alone had scenes featuring buckets of blood on the wall, people getting impaled on the chest, and women with broken necks coming back to life. It's definitely not for kids.
- Constantine is too competent. He shouldn't be at first. Earlier in his series he didn't really exhibit flashy, powerful magic. Part of his appeal was that he relied more on his skills as a con artist (and cheap magic tricks) in order to put one over his enemies. He only became a major offensive threat when he co-opted Santa Claus' power. The TV version looks like he can solve everything with a latin incantation. Latin incantations are his sonic screwdriver.
