i've come into a few of these recently, and i'm really liking this! charlton comics was probably doing, overall, the best horror comics produced in the late 60's/70's -- and they did a ton of them. graves is remembered for steve ditko's work, but in the later issues, like the ones I have, it's a real uneven grab-bag of art talent. just the way I like it! for example, one issue has don perlin (ghost rider!), and the fantastic sanho kim (charlton's house of yang!) who made graves look older, fatter, and asian! ah, but don't get me started on dr. graves
(not signed, but if that ain't friggin' PAT BOYETTE, i'll eat it!)
urbane & detatched, with that kevin smith goatee, graying reed richards sideburns, and his asides like "it had been many years since i'd visited the land of the pharaohs" -- liar! he's in egypt in about 3 different comics! or "supernatural spirits ... or as you say ghosts!" and he's always got something up his sleeve. always has some nasty surprise for the invading spirits, and they knew it!
he's the the polar opposite of gold key's dr. spektor
with his john wilkes booth outfit, wakeen phoenix chin spinach, and john wilkes booth haircut, (dr.? yeah, right) spektor got more deeply embroiled into the action than the grave-meister ever did. often getting kissy with the ghost/witch/gorgon or the female he was supposed to be helping, and generally went in half-cocked with no real plan. more often than not he'd scream & run away when confronted with evil. and at the end write in his journal how he was, "held helpless by unseen forces while she was pulled into oblivion." what a tool! also got some Charlton's "scary tales" and "baron weirwulf's haunted library". more on those later. this stuff is gold!!
