Matt Smith has revealed that he doesn't want to see River Song appear with Peter Capaldi's Doctor in the new series of Doctor Who.
Smith joked at a Q&A panel at New Orleans Comic-Con last weekend: "I’m really possessive over Alex [Kingston]. I said this to Steven [Moffat]. I was like, ‘Listen, just don’t! Just not Alex. Anyone else, but don’t give [Capaldi] River.’ But Peter is the Doctor now so hey, what can I do?"
He added: "I think that Steven will be planning things that are going to unfold over years and I think he’ll reinvent the folklore, and it will become Peter’s folklore. But I am really proud of the fact that Alex was part of number Eleven’s life. My wife!"
The pair appeared together in 12 episodes during Smith's era.
It was announced yesterday that Alex Kingston will join Doctor Who actor Noel Clarke alongside The League of Gentlemen's Reece Shearsmith in Chasing Shadows, a new ITV crime drama about a missing persons field unit charged with tracking down serial killers.
Series 8 of Doctor Who is currently filming in Cardiff and is expected to begin airing in August.

I don't get this. Didn't the Doctor boff Amy Pond, and Amy is River Song's mum, so the Doctor boffed both his wife and his wife's mum?
On the one hand, well played sir. On the other hand, controversial!

When did they ever say the Doctor boffed Amy Pond? They made a pretty big deal about her being married.
Amy and Rory's baby happened to be a human mutant with Time Lord properties, because they got pregnant in the Tardis.

The doctor didn't boff Amy Pond. Amy tried, but it was unsuccessful (Smith did get a nice round of face sucking with the Karen Gillan out of it, though.)
Oddly enough, this reminds me of that interview with Moffat addressing fans' accusation that he has sexualized the doctor. Moffat was adamant, stating that they are probably watching a different Who because he specifically wrote the doctor as being awkward around women. Personally, I think the whole doctor-as-boyfriend-material started with Russell T. Davies, but come on Moffat. He certainly added to it. All that flirting with River Song and Tasha Lem points to a doctor that has a sexual side. And the subtle joke about an erection (the sonic screwdriver) when the doctor saw Jenny's super spy costume.
Also, it's got nothing to do with being awkward around women. It's the fact that women are always coming on to the doctor, and his awkwardness actually makes him even more appealing to women. Moffat's lying his ass off about not having anything to do with the doctor's newfound status as boyfriend material.

Until "The Name of the Doctor", the marriage between the Doctor and River didn't seem like a real thing. Or at least not the romance 10 and Rose had. It was like, "Oh, okay, she's his wife. Whatever". That kiss they shared seemed to legitimize it. Other than that, there was the brief moment of tenderness he showed her in healing her wrist in "The Angels take Manhattan."

I like that logic. It means I got laid a lot more in high school and college than I thought.
