Distractions during driving are a known safety hazard. It has lead auto makers to put stereo tuning and volume controls on the steering wheel to avoid leaning forward to adjust the radio. It was been a hot topic for years regarding cell phone use and texting while driving. There have been accidents reported while putting on makeup, reading the paper and even while breast feeding. Now there is a reported accident caused by shaving while driving. This was not done by a burly man trimming up his beard either. It was caused by a woman.
While driving her 1995 Thunderbird, she hit the back of a 2006 Chevy pickup truck and then left the scene. To make matter worse she did not have a valid license because the day before she was picked up on a repeat D.U.I. charge. She was sentenced to nine months of probation because of that D.U.I. and her license was revoked for five years. Once she gets her license back she must have a breathalyzer ignition interlock devise installed on any vehicle she drives. Wait there is more!
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the two-car crash on Cudjoe Key was caused by the 37-year-old woman because she was shaving her bikini area while in the driver's seat. Yes, her bikini area. Megan Mariah Barnes and her ex-husband Charles Judy were driving southbound at 11A.M. when they slammed into the back of a pick-up. Her ex-husband was steering from the passenger seat. The pick-up truck, driven by David Schoff of Palm Bay, was slowing to take a turn when it was hit by Barnes. Luckily all injuries were minor. Wait there is more!
She initially lied to the deputy who pulled the car over. Barnes and Judy allegedly drove a half-mile after fleeing the accident scene and then switched seats. When they were pulled over, Judy claimed that he had been driving. The trooper however noticed burns on Judy's chest from the passenger-side airbag which deployed on impact. The airbag in the steering wheel apparently did not deploy. Wait there is more!
Trooper Gary Dunick, who referred to the trimming procedure as "landscaping”, stated the woman had an explanation. She explained that she was meeting her boyfriend in Key West and wanted to be ready for the visit. What a thoroughly understanding and thoughtful ex husband Barnes has! It makes you wonder why they ever broke up.
Barnes was charged with reckless driving, driving with a revoked license, leaving the scene of a crash with injuries, and driving without auto insurance. She could face up to a year in jail if found guilty of violating her probation. Judy was not charged in the crash.
It is not known whether she ever found another ride to go see her boyfriend in Key West.
