Tonight's episode kicks the new season off to a good start. Missy is in fine manic form She has a pretty interesting way of looking at her relationship with the Doctor.Sure, she and the Doctor try to kill each other, but they're still friends. They're relationship is just more complex because they're thousands of years old.
They're dealing with some pretty heavy issues with Davros. THat whole "If you could go back in time and kill Hitler when he was just a kid, would you? In doing what he did, is the Doctor responsible for Davros and all who died because of him?
The icing on the cake for me was how the Skaro parts were shot, giving it that Classic WHo feel.

I like the 2-parter.
Missy is in top form. I love how the episodes reiterated that he/she is basically a mirror to the doctor, but they made a point not to make her too sympathetic. The early bits where she killed the agents and what she tried to get the doctor to do to Clarek were horrible, and reminds everyone that she's still pretty much the villain. Also loved Missy taking offense to Davros being the doctor's rival.
The only things that I didn't like as much as the rest of the story is Davros' plan. It would have made for a good story if he got a sendoff from the doctor. But of course, we can't have that. The doctor and Davros' rivalry is such a big part of the mythos that there's no way they will rewrite it (which is the reason why I kept waiting for Davros to turn around and reveal that he's taking the doctor for a spin.)
The other is the sunglasses. Is it going to be Capald's bowtie? It's too hokey but I can dig it as long as it doesn't permanently replace the sonic screwdriver. But I dunno - I got started on NuWho (Smith's run, to be more precise) and just worked my way backwards so I wasn't familiar with the screwdriver-less era so the screwdriver for me is every bit a part of the character as the tardis.

Same here. If the sunglasses are really replacing the screwdriver, I'm going to be pissed. I hope they're just like 11's sonic cane in "Lets kill Hitler".

just watched the 2 hr season premiere. missy is amazing. with her little "whoops!" and what not. that is one very good actress! she does the former 'masters' proud. yeah, but mean & crazy as sh-t! just nuts!!! love capald. he somehow looked younger in the new episode! more rested, i guess. no, hated the sunglasses. stupid!!! clara. clara is as tough as a nickel steak! damn, i'll miss her. i guess it's worth it having to wait so long when they put out such an incredibly well written episode. it's almost like each one is a landmark. but yeah, we need the screwdriver back. he could at least point it at people in a weaponish manner. the glasses need to go

Michelle Gomez is brilliant!!!
I want a show about when she transformed into this incarnation up until she comes back into the Doctor's life!

There's no potential to sell toys with the sunglasses. Kids think toy sunglasses suck. If they didn't, Zany Zappers would still be around. The quality does seem to be up with all the time they have, but there needs to have something to fill the void. "The Walking Dead" has "Fear the Walking Dead" now. We need an Alternate Who show. Minis or specials to get us through. I'd love an Alternate series with the 8th Doctor. Or Sean Pertwee could revive his dad's third Doctor role and do new adventures set in the 70s. Or Big Finish could add animation to some of their stories. Tom Baker is doing new audio adventures, so that could be awesome. |
