rian Michael Bendis helped shape the fabric of the modern-day Marvel universe, and now we finally know what he’ll be doing after officially making the jump to DC Comics. Not surprisingly, he’ll be taking over some high-profile series, reviving some personal projects, and even getting his own imprint.
Long story short: Bendis is going big into Superman. The publisher has confirmed Bendis will be helming a six-issue weekly miniseries titled Man of Steel, which will launch in May and “shake up” the story of Krpyton’s final days and Kal-El’s journey to becoming Superman. The series also promises to introduce a new villain who knows a “terrifying secret” about the destruction of Krypton. That series will feature art by a list of heavy hitters including Ivan Reis, Evan “Doc” Shaner, Ryan Sook, Kevin Maguire, Adam Hughes, and Jason Fabok. The miniseries will also feature six interconnected covers by Ivan Reis and Joe Prado (which you can view below via DC Comics).
After that, Bendis will take the reins of a new Superman series, as well as DC flagship Action Comics. Superman #1, with art by Ivan Reis, drops on July 11. It will be followed by Bendis’ official Action Comics debut with issue #1001 (though he's writing a backup story before that). Bendis’ Superman will pick up after the fallout of the Man of Steel limited series, while Action Comics promises to be a more “character-focused” approach, looking at Clark Kent’s time at the Daily Planet and how Superman impacts the larger DC universe. Action Comics will feature art by Pat Gleason.
The DC move will also see the revival of Bendis’ Jinxworld line of more adult comic series, with series such as Powers, Scarlet, and The United States of Murder Inc. picking up with new issues at DC later this year. A back catalog of Jinxworld material will also arrive at DC later this year. The publisher is also teasing plans for a “custom” imprint curated by Bendis, though details on that are relatively thin. The imprint will apparently feature some of Bendis’ “all-time favorite characters” placed in “very unique and unusual situations.” Established characters will also be joined by new characters created for the imprint.
It’s no surprise to see DC handing over its flagship hero to Bendis in Superman—his track record at Marvel is stellar, and he has decades of experience taking established characters and making them feel fresh. The Jinxworld revival and select imprint are also good news, as it seems DC is keen to give Bendis the storytelling freedom to explore different ideas. The imprint could also turn out to be a good experimental sandbox to pilot some fresh concepts.
Are you excited to see what Bendis does with these properties? Have any requests of what else you’d like to see?
