DC Rethinking Black Label Imprint Following Batpenis Backlash
Jim Lee chalked the dong up to a production error.
In an interview with Polygon, DC Publisher Jim Lee referred to Batman hanging dong in Batman: The Damned #1 as a "production error." The Outhouse is chalk full of errors, but not once have we let loose a dick on the populace. Well, maybe once.
"It's made us, certainly, look at what Black Label is and think about whether these elements are additive to the story. And that's something that we'll be mindful of going forward, because I don't think we want necessarily a repeat of what happened with the first issue."
Not one to let Lee fall on his sword alone, co-publisher Dan Didio had more to add.
"It's something we wished never happened, because it really took the attention away from what we thought was quality storytelling, and that's not the way we see this imprint. As a matter of fact, we're excited by all the books that we have under Black Label. And it's an important line for us, so much so that we're actually repositioning some of our older material that has that same tonality and bringing it in and reprinting it under the Black Label name."
Titles previously announced to be reprinted under the Black Label name include Batman: Year One, DC: The New Frontier, and Batman: White Knight.
Upcoming Black Label titles include Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's Batman: Last Knight on Earth, Frank Miller and John Romita Jr.'s Superman: Year One, John Ridley's The Other History of the DC Universe, and Kelly Sue DeConnick and Phil Jimenez's Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons.
The next issue Batman: The Damned #2 is set to release December 5 instead of November 21, giving the art team time to cover up the batdicks.
