Based on the 1995 Terry Gilliam film, SyFy series "12 Monkeys" is set for a January 2015 debut with Aaron Stanford and Amanda Schull in pivotal roles.
Where Bruce Willis was Gilliam's troubled hero, it's Aaron Stanford ("Nikita," "X-Men: The Last Stand") who becomes time-traveling fugitive James Cole for the TV series.
Opposite him is Amanda Schull of "Suits" and "J. Edgar" as the present-day Dr. Railly, who Cole believes gave him his mission and can lead him to the man he seeks: Leland Frost (Zelijko Ivanek of "Argo" and "True Blood"), the key to a deadly epidemic that plunges humanity into a post-apocalyptic future.
Like the original "12 Monkeys," the series is shaping up to tell a story of tangled timelines, fragmented mystery and fate.
Though its first trailer follows in Gilliam's footsteps, a change of first names for Railly and the early introduction of new character Leland show that, like "Fargo," "12 Monkeys" looks to make its own narrative choices at the hands of director Jeffrey Reiner ("Friday Night Lights," "The Event").

I'm not sure how to feel about this.
Having loved the movie since I saw it in theatres, I've always told people to check out 12 Monkeys as an example of how to do a time travel story really well. Plus, it's a really entertaining movie with fantastic performances by Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt.
Making '90s movies into TV series is all the rage nowadays, but I can't help but think that this one in particular just didn't need to be made. We'll see, I guess.

To be fair, The Highlander film (the first one) was awesome, and when they turned it into a TV show it was awesome-er.
Then they turned the TV show into a film again and it sucked hard. The spin-off also sucked. And the cartoon. And the videogame based on the cartoon.

I never saw the Highlander cartoon. I'm guessing no one got their head cut off.

baboon, what'doya always gotta be rude for? i done got ahold of these a few years ago, and they're not bad! it stars quentin macleod of the clan dundee! they're in one of my huge case logic dvd notebooks, so I'm not sure where they are now, and may never see them again. connor macleod shows up in the series! which, no matter what, would make it all worthwhile

my freind, i must disagree with you. although 'highlander endgame' was awesome beyond words. and btw, connor owned duncan in the final fight! but he just could not bear to kill his pal. and if you can watch this without crying, theres no human in you

we're not actually in disagreement, as I consider endgame as part of the TV series and therefore awesome as well. When thinking of highlander films that sucked, I was thinking more of the one with the WWE's Kane where they became Dragonball Z and started fighting in supersonic speeds.

Another awesome TV series spun-off from a series of films (and another that traffics in swordfights) is Japan's Zatoichi. It's about a blind masseur who is a master swordsman, wandering from place to place and slashing bastards while saving innocents. He's like Daredevil with a cane sword. And it came from that period in time when Japan had leading men who actually looked like men.
All the episodes and films are on Youtube these days and I've been marathoning the crap out of them. It's like the Doctor Who of Japan, but it aged better because it's not reliant on special fx. They also made a few modern takes on the franchise, with varying degrees of success. The first one was by Beat Takeshi and retained the feel of the original, but splattered CGI all over the place. The second one followed a new character - a female Ichi - that is said to be the original's pupil. The most recent one was an attempt to Batman Begins the shit out of the franchise: they cast a former boyband member as Ichi, made it all edgy and gloomy, and then Ichi died like a punk in the end. It was a stupid film that deserved all the hate it got.
Oh, and Hollywood remade one of the films and stuck Rutger Hauer on the lead role: Blind Fury.
