Throughout Season 8 of "Doctor Who" it was rumored that Jenna Coleman was preparing to exit the series. In the end it never came to pass, but showrunner Steven Moffat is finally setting the record straight.
In an interview with Doctor Who Magazine, via Radio Times, he reveals Coleman was originally going to leave during the Season 8 finale, "Death in Heaven."
"That was her last episode," Moffat says. "And then she asked me if she could be in Christmas? So I said, 'Okay, I'll write you out in Christmas.' She came to the read-through and did the 'write out' version -- and again changed her mind."
That's twice Coleman nearly left the series before changing her mind at the last minute. Luckily, Moffat was pleased she had second thoughts. "The truth is I never wanted her to go. I didn't really want 'Death in Heaven' to be her last episode," he says. "And with 'Last Christmas,' I'd already written the alternative version where she stayed, and I preferred that version."
Now, Clara will become the longest-tenured companion of the modern "Doctor Who" era. Coleman confirmed in December that she would stick around through the end of Season 9, which will bring her episode count as companion to 38 -- edging out Karen Gillan and her 31 episodes.
