i'm really putting this up because i'm referencing it for a story chapter! but i have to tell you, I LOVE this comic. it's actually a 3 issue story arc that eventually pulls in deadman and (no surprise) swamp thing. this was a few years old already by the time I saw it, but it was my first taste of the challengers, swamp thing, and of h.p. lovecraft! you look at these covers you might think, that's mike grell, no wait, ric buckler! but no, it's a devotee of neal adams named mike nasser. who was 21 when these came out. he was perfect for this. I still remember one panel where "rocky" davis punches a robed-hooded cultist, and his hand disappears in goo. rocky yells "yucck!!" he really drew good goop. perdition was a hell of a town! as best as I can recall (help me out) prof. had some kind of creeping crud on his chest, and the challengers track it's source to perdition. the comic was pretty creepy. this is from the unofficial 'perdition' history
(town of perdition from swamp thing #8)
A small Pennsylvania mining town where a man named Abraham Monroe summoned an ungodly entity named M'nagalah in the early 20th century. M'nagalah devoured Monroe and took control of the town, demanding living sacrifices and growing larger and more powerful over the years. Decades later, the Swamp Thing (IV) reached Perdition. The townfolk sent him to face M'nagalah, and the Swamp Thing apparently won. But M'nagalah survived, a part of his being clinging to the arm of a Jason Monroe. Jason's cousin, Dr Heathcliff Monroe, voluntarily became a vessel for M'nagalah and started a cult in his honor, holding the town in an iron grip. Finally, M'nagalah was again defeated by the Swamp Thing and the Challengers of the Unknown (I), the battle leaving Perdition in flames.
pretty cool! i'll tell you, this was my favorite comic story of all time until i saw 'gotterdammerung' with batman & manhunter. much later I got then entire swamp thing run, and finally saw berni wrightson's perdition. yow! would challengers of the unknown #82 be any good if i saw it today? ummm, afraid to guess. it WAS written by gerry conway after all. anyway, perdition never dies
