For those of you who are friends of mine on Facebook, I've decided to take a break. Partly it's because I'm sick of all the division, but mostly it's because Facebook is such a time sink unless you have more self-control than I do. I'd rather spend time with a smaller number of people on a few choice message boards. Old school, I know, but the interactions are better.

Scott Shaw has been painful to follow on Facebook the last couple of years. He's gone in my mind from being a beloved comic creator to my youth to a near-sixty guy who acts like a millenial doofus. Nearly every post is some anti-trump diatribe or liberal rhetoric. He even changed his icon to a black lives matter banner. The closest thing to a post about cartoons recently was his favorite anti-Trump political cartoon. Is it too much to ask for the occasional Captain Carrot post?

I've found that happening with most of the comics creators on Facebook, especially the ones I grew up reading. Nothing but politics from them now, which really isn't why I followed them in the first place. Unsubscribe.

i wish i had your nerve. i'm too invested in fb to quit! i got a cornucopia of acquaintances, former co-workers, cousins, aunts, in-laws and what-not waiting to see whether or not i'm going to "like" their new cover photo. and i enjoy gaging what's going on in people's lives. like when some girl (or guy) posts some sort of "he doesn't deserve me" jpg. and i love 'the charlton arrow', 'dell and gold key comics', t.h.u.n.d.e.r. agents', 'the fawcett universe', 'tower comics', 'old guys who like old comics' ... and so on! and i like that i have in-laws overly excited about trump being elected, and cousins who think we're like 1940's france occupied by the nazis! i really have to "like" cautiously sometimes
and it's nice one my day off (today) to be cheered by this cool charlton "beyond the grave" cover
comment 1: tom sutton?
comment 2: sure looks like it to me.

Well, I actually have two Facebook accounts. The Facebook account I deactivated was what I used for all my comic-book fandom stuff. The other account is just family and friends, and I just post pictures of my two-year-old there. I didn't deactivate that one, but I did log out, and am only posting pictures there through Instagram.
Anyway, I discovered an unexpected side-effect of closing down your Facebook account: You can't post comments on many websites, since they rely on using the Facebook commenting plugin and have no other options for posting comments. I really hate that. At least with another option like Disqus (which we use on the Five Earths Project website: www.5earths.info) you can sign in with multiple methods: a Disqus account or Facebook, Twitter, or Google.
Two sites that I used to comment on and can't any longer are www.cbr.com (formerly comicbookresources.com) and www.comicsalliance.com. I guess it's just as well, as cbr.com has gone downhill with the new ownership and redesign.
I do miss my comic-book groups on Facebook, but I was getting sick of all the political stuff creeping into it. I may reactivate it in a month or two, after I've kicked the habit.

I'm starting to rediscover blogs. There are a lot of comic-book blogs out there, and some of them have good communities of fans with commenting. I've also tried out some more obscure new social networks with mixed success.

I quit Facebook again. This time because I'm tired of the idiots with their insane opinions on things. I may rejoin again next week or next month, or perhaps never. We'll see.
