I was probably the last comic fan in America to see this movie. The wife and kid wanted to see Beauty and the Beast, so I decided to see this instead. I never saw the first or second one, but it's Wolverine, so it's not like I was gonna be lost. Plus, this is loosely based on "Old Man Logan", so there aren't any ties to past Wolverine movies.
This is a damn good movie! There were some parts of it that really choked me up and you really don't expect something like that in an X-Men related movie. His relationship to the old, frail Professor X suffering from alzheimers is really touching. Thre's also some pretty interesting stuff happening with the most powerful brain on the planet suffering from that illness.
The action starts when a nurse reveals the existence of his 11 yo clone daughter, X-23 aka Laura. She is being pursued by the reavers and an evil scientist. She gives him money to get him to get her to safe haven with the promise of more money to come. He's reluctant to help but finds himself drawn in anyway. Professor X, of course, is enthusiastic since this is the first new mutant seen in about 25 years.
The movie earns its R rating because of violence and language (and a scene where a bride to be flashes Logan her boobs while he's doing his job as limo driver). It's really jarring to see Professor X drop F bombs.
Overall, it's a powerful film. If a Batman movie can win awards, then this one should, too.
