this has of course been an age old debate. well not really, as curly has been considered the hands down winner for all our lifetimes. however, what keeps shemp in the fight is his peerless ability to throw out a crude remark. like this one. "ain't that lady bow-legg-ed!" (1:32) -- like honey from the lips of an angel!

What was the order for the third stooge? You had Shemp, but then you had Curly and Curly Joe.

okay, bear with me. i'm a big stooge fan anyway and i've been listening to the girlbert gottfried podcasts, and those guys are stooge fanatics. when the stooges were very young & first working with ted healey it was moe, larry, and shemp. he always said shemp was the most talented one.
by the time they broke from healey and began producing the shorts, shemp had left was getting a lot of small film parts. he even worked with w.c. fields.
that's when shemp & moe's younger brother they called babe (curly) joined the act. i've read he didn't want to shave his head because he though he was handsome enough to be a leading man! probably because he didn't have them big bags under his eyes like moe & shemp!
curly started having strokes, but still kept smoking, drinking, over-eating & marrying! it didn't slow him down. they got shemp to replace him, and they all, including larry, insisted on giving curly a piece of their salaries. he appeared one last time with hair! but died soon after
shemp was the oldest howard brother. and one day when they were riding in a cab, they say he told a funny story, settled back for a nap and never woke up. he was 60.
then they got joe besser so they could fulfill their contract.
he wasn't adept at the eye pokin' & slappin', so they cut back on that stuff. movie shorts were dying out anyways, although later moe learned that screen gems was using their popularity to package & sell a lot of their other crappy shorts. moe felt like they'd been cheated financially pretty badly over the years. anyway, their contract ended, but then the shorts began airing on tv and the kids went crazy for them! why wouldn't they? moe & larry were older than mud by this time, certainly by 1960's standards, but film studios began throwing money at them to produce full length feature films. they found (curly) joe de rita, a night club comedian, i believe. he bore a passing resemblance to curly -- yeah, about like i bear a passing resemblance to chris rock! you could walk down the street & find a guy who looked more like curly
they made a bunch of really cheap movies, and even a cartoon series!
moe looks like he wanted to poke fred in the eyes! i hope he did
they did their own voices on scooby doo, but moe & larry croaked before the did 'the robotic stooges' and joe de rita was not asked to do the voice. well, take care!

Maybe the Litte Stooges shoud have gone with a son of Shemp. Curly had that crew cut and the best they coud do to try and hippie up Curly Jr was to give him bell bottoms and an ascot.

Curly every time. He had such a distinctive and iconic style. Shemp, or any of the later replacements did nothing for me. Can you imagine Jabberjaw speaking like Shemp???

that's true, but a world without shemp would be intolerable! when talking of the stooges, a friend of mine used to say "all we are saaaaying, is give shemp a chance! -- we're in bed for shemp! we grow our hair for shemp!"
(picture shemp instead of alf)

A Fake Shemp or, simply, Shemp, is the term for someone who appears in a film under heavy make-up, filmed from the back, or perhaps only showing an arm or a foot. ... It was aspiring filmmaker Sam Raimi, a professed Stooges fan, who coined the term in the movie The Evil Dead.
this is fascinating! it's apparently common knowledge, and i just found out about it. i read that george lucas used a shemp so good for 'raiders of the lost ark' when harrison ford was injured, you can't tell the difference. ford said that they could have gone home with each other's wives & nobody would have known! now check out a real fake shemp. i noticed them as a kid wishing i didn't have to go to church on sunday morning, but i guess i assumed they used a double for continuity, not because shemp croaked. i'll bet poor moe hated calling his dead brother a lame-brain and a puddin' head.
hee bee bee bee bee bee bee bee!!!!!
