The DCEU Films have been a $3 billion success at the box office but it has had a rocky road along the way. Four out of the five current films within the franchise have been divisive among critics and the audience with only Wonder Woman emerging as the one film in the franchise that is well-receive by both sides. The film slate has gone through continuous changes going as far back as mid-2016 after the negative backlash towards Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice and a struggle to hold down directors such as Dope director Rick Famuyiwa who was slated to direct The Flash.
Now more news has come from the more recent shake-up at Warner Bros. after the troubling critical and box office reception of Justice League. It was announced that Jon Berg would be leaving his position at the studio as co-president of production and co-chairman of the DC Films division to form a Warner Bros. based production company with Roy Lee, the producer of The Lego Movie and It. It is expected that at this time Warner Brothers is looking for a replacement for Berg with Geoff Johns assuming more of an advisory role. This news should obviously be treated with the proverbial grain of salt, a new rumor suggests that a new division head has already been found and will be announced fairly soon. It’s a person that fans will undoubtedly be excited for should it be true!
DCEU all-stars Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill are reportedly in the middle of negotiations to renew their contracts this month. If the negotiations prove successful and they go through then according to contract details Ben Affleck will become the new head of DC Films and will also direct the untitled Justice League sequel. Henry Cavill will of course be set to star as Superman in approximately three of the upcoming DC Extended Universe productions and have a cameo appearance in two of them. Fans are hoping that at least one of these films is the desperately needed Man of Steel sequel.
If the rumors of Affleck taking over the reins of the DC Films division are true then it would prove to be a great step forward for the DC Extended Universe as Affleck is a well-respected director and actor in a Hollywood as well as a passionate comic book fan. He could right the ship and steer it out of the choppy waters that it currently is residing in by getting the directors and the studio executives all on the same page with a unified vision for the franchise much like how Kevin Feige has done for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The rumor, however, does not mention anything of Affleck’s return as Bruce Wayne/Batman Matt Reeves’ planned The Batman trilogy or Flashpoint but the sole focus of the rumor was Ben attaining a higher position within the studio. It does not mean he is not returning to the role. Hopefully, the rumor turns out to be true and the negotiations go swimmingly. We will find out soon enough!
The next film in the DC Extended Universe is James Wan’s Aquaman starring Jason Momoa. Aquaman splashes into theaters on December 21st, 2018!
