this comic was a spinoff of Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos. i have a few of these, which turns out to be almost all of them since only 9 issues were produced. what a friggin' blood bath! by the end, all the troops were dead, killed off over 9 issues, Kelly's love interest was maimed by an evil nazi doctor, and kelly threw his stripes at his commanding officer & resigned. dino manelli (g-d, a total dean martin clone), percy pinkerton (the most bizarre english stereotype character i've ever seen in a comic) and jay little bear (not the worst native american comic character I've seen, but not great), who are attached to the dozen go back to the howling commandos, i guess. all & all, i'd feel much safer with sgt. fury! oh, and it was (although there was a 1950's combat kelly, sans dozen) all a gigantic ripoff of the old movie "the dirty dozen".
by the end they were 'combat kelly & his deadly dozen'. they were his & his alone! he was probably terrified he'd wake up one morning and some easy company guys or blackhawks would have replaced some of his dozen! they were all convicts, including kelly. the artwork didn't appeal to me right away. i expected more of a brooding joe kubert style. but dick ayers, who worked on 'howling commandos' did fine work, and i could see a little Kirby in his style. the stories were good. the dialogue? not so hot usually. ultimately, with all the deaths i found it depressing! i ain't a big fan of gurl torturin', and although it ain't liked i loved any of the characters, it was sad seeing them picked off like flies

That stuff is way over the top for the time! Especially the whole achiles tendon thing.
I had to google that thing wit Nick Fury once you mentioned it. Brutal!

and the scary just keeps coming! i was browsing the letter columns of the later issues, and Marvel is getting asked how come the character of "hillbilly" wagner, is showing up in nick fury & his howling commandos, when he got killed in "dozen" about 4 issues ago! yikes!!!! nick fury was getting visted by a haunted hillbilly
oh crap error! I just seen a site explaining that fury had a second guy (reb ralston) that also got referred to as hillbilly, confusing some fans. i feel liek n idiot! but to be fair to myself, why didn't the person answering the letter column know that?
(did you ever see a dozen die. good article!) zoomy.blogspot.com/2012/02/did-you-ever-see-dozen-die.html
so much for my haunted hillbilly theory. but it's still creepy
(reb ralston. not a ghost, just a spooky guy.)

that's 'bullseye' miller'! a mechanic for the howlin' commandos and one of the top 10 sharpshooters in the armed forces. but he killed a guy who dropped the 'n-bomb' on him, and wound up in the dozen by way of military prison his fro is looking a little shaggy in this pichur

What's with the chick walking around with her belly button out? Back in the 40s, if women tied their shirts like that, their pants were practically hiked to their ribs.
