I found the news alarming at first, but then I researched the engineer and read the transcripts. It's a nothingburger. The engineer is one of those typical nerds that take everything seriously (I mean, look at him with that fancy suit and tophat). The AI bot no longer looks that sentient if you read the transcript in full. The engineer cherry picked conversation threads that would support what he wants to show.
It's not the potential of a truly sentient AI that I find concerning, rather it's the fact that Google's AI is that rudimentary, yet they still depend on AI to run a huge chunk of their business processes. It's no wonder their search engine is crappy now and easily gamed by so-called SEO experts.
