A Florida Congressman has introduced impeachment articles against President Joe Biden, coming as the first member of his Republican party colleagues to jump-start the process.
Rep. Greg Steub (R-FL) presented the articles as a number of other congressional committees continue building more inclusive cases to remove Biden as the country's head of state.
He filed articles of impeachment against Biden, charging the president with complicity in his son Hunter Biden's alleged crimes, who he is accusing of helping to shield him from prosecution.
In a statement, Steube said, "it’s long past time to impeach Joe Biden." He went on to add, "he has undermined the integrity of his office, brought disrepute on the Presidency, betrayed his trust as President, and acted in a manner subversive of the rule of law and justice at the expense of America’s citizens." In Steube's four articles of impeachment, he accuses President Biden of high crimes and misdemeanors.
The same day as his introduction of the articles, Steube brought forward legislation requiring the head of the Secret Service to file reports about illegal use of controlled substances in the White House. This follows the Secret Service's completion of its inquiry into cocaine being discovered at the White House in July — without identifying a person of interest. Steube named the legislation the, "Helping Understand Narcotics Traces at the Executive Residence (HUNTER) Act."
He alleges the president abused his powers by accepting bribes, committing Hobbs Act extortion, and honest services fraud, stemming from his time in office. The claims stem from Biden's alleged involvement with his family's business dealings, including business dealings involving Hunter, as well as the president's brother, James Biden. This, as part of an effort, according to Steubes, to provide access to the ear of the then-Vice President Biden from 2009 until 2017, as part of a plan exchanging "payments and business opportunities from foreign and domestic business partners."
In a memo released by House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer, R-Ky, on Wednesday, he claims that foreign payments to the Biden family totaled more than $20 million. However, Democrats say there is zero evidence proving the president accepted any payments, or behaved in misconduct.
The second article accuses President Biden of obstructing justice, and refers to IRS whistleblower testimony to Congress stating, "members of the Biden campaign improperly colluded with Justice Department officials to improperly interfere with investigations into tax crimes alleged to have been committed by Hunter Biden."
"The evidence continues to mount by the day – the Biden Crime Family has personally profited off Joe’s government positions through bribery, threats, and fraud. Joe Biden must not be allowed to continue to sit in the White House, selling out our country," Steube said in a statement.
The Justice Department, as well as special counsel David Weiss, the U.S. attorney appointed to oversee the Hunter Biden inquiry, have denied any impeding by the Biden administration into Weiss' investigation.
The third and fourth articles allege Biden committed "fraud," and paid for Hunter's illegal drug and other illicit activities.
