Actress Arleen Sorkin, best known for originating the Harley Quinn character in “Batman: The Animated Series” and for her role as Calliope Jones on “Days of Our Lives,” has reportedly passed away. She was 67.
The news was revealed by veteran voice actor Neil Kaplan on Twitter who says: “It broke my heart to hear… the original voice of Harley Quinn, [Arleen] Sorkin has passed away.” Since then, Sorkin’s death was confirmed by DC Studios co-head James Gunn in a post on Instagram, and by trade The Hollywood Reporter who says she passed on Thursday and had been battling health issues.
Quinn was psychiatrist Dr. Harleen Quinzel who worked at Arkham Asylum and whose mind was warped by The Joker (voiced by Mark Hamill) into becoming his girlfriend.
The character wasn’t in the comics, it was an original creation by the actress and Sorkin’s college friend Paul Dini for the legendary 1990s animated “Batman” series. The role became arguably the show’s biggest single permanent contribution to Batman lore (along with its more tragic origin story for Mr. Freeze).
The role was such a breakout success that Sorkin reprised it in multiple series, from “Superman: The Animated Series” to “Justice League,” along with several video games and films like “Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker”. Sorkin also played another character in “Batman: Mask of the Phantasm”.
Sorkin also co-starred with “Star Trek” alum John de Lancie for several years on “Days of Our Lives,” the pair famously involved in some of the more out-there elements of the daytime soap, including time travel and androids.
Sorkin was also a co-host of “America’s Funniest People”. She leaves behind television producer husband Christopher Lloyd (who co-created “Modern Family”) and two sons. Our sincerest condolences go out to her friends, family and fans.
