I've been using Avast for months now, never had any problem but the most recent update completely blocked all web access (finding this out took an entire day's worth of troubleshooting everything, including our router and another PC on the network, which can access the internet just fine). Turns out I can access the Internet fine if I disable Avast's web shield. I've tried googling around (funny how searching Google for answers to Tech questions sometimes brings up nothing but forum posts with smart arses answering with "Google it, beech.") - it seems like this is a problem with Avast's firewall module, and it has happened several times in the past, the only solution is to uninstall the firewall part, and I'll be having none of that. It just seems kind of irresponsible - especially for a company dealing with code vulnerabilities - to release buggy code and features.
So, any recommendations for a good antivirus? I've used AVG years ago. Just stopped when they started becoming bloated but maybe they got their shit together now?
I've also had experiences with Norton and McAffee, as both came installed on some of the PCs I've had in the past and they were more trouble than they are worth, bloated and obtrusive.

For running quick virus and malware scans, I use Malwarebytes.

your experience sounds similar to mine. avg is a good product, but a real resource hog. avast is great, probably the best free antivirus out there, but it really slows my laptop down. and that lady's voice yelling at me constantly about this or that just really bugs me! i get enough of that from my wife!
i've gone back & fort to avast probably half a dozen times. this summer I switched to microsoft security essentials. I like it a lot. it's a lighter virus engine than avg or avast. it almost certainly won't catch everything that avast or avg does, but it's less dictatorial than those two, not so much in your bidness. and it's kept me safe. you might give it a try. avast for me, is sometimes like 'HAL' from 2001! if i try to shut down a process, "i'm sorry mh, I can't do that."
but so far mse hasn't given me anything to complain about. and it gets great reviews. i keep malware bytes and superantispyware available in case of real trouble. I don't currently have them active, but they're there if I need them. ccleaner is another great program that keeps your cache's cleaned out and your pc moving faster, if you aren't already using it, I'd recommend it. now let's talk browsers!

I have malware bytes, it's certainly better than Avast but it's not passive protection. I wanted something that I can just run in the background and protect me from minor lapses in judgement. Antiviruses are the police, malware bytes is the national guard.
I've forgotten about Microsoft Security Essentials, though. But I've tried AVG again, and they seem to have shaped up now. It doesn't seem to be as much a resource hog as it was a few years ago (but then again, maybe I just have a more powerful PC these days?). I'll be trying this out and see if it works fine. Worst case scenario, disable all internet access on Windows and just use it for gaming, leaving work stuff to the ubuntu that I have installed on the other partition.
As for Browsers, I kinda hate how he always kidnaps Mario's woman.

I trust Mario's version of the events because he has the cool moustache.
