So some schools are starting to back away from teaching proper English to kids and calling slang “black English?” What’s the point to this? Not teaching the proper way to speak and giving them the thumbs up for using slang is a disservice to these kids, they are not doing them any favors. Good luck speaking slang in a job interview and in the real world.
And the article says it’s not slang, it’s a different kind of English. No, it’s slang, pure and simple. And one example of “black English” is saying Yo instead of Hello. Black English? Decades ago when I was in college, any time somebody knocked on my door, I answered Yo! I think I got it from Rocky or old World War II movies. Go ahead and use slang, but be taught the correct way to speak. Don’t pat kids on the back for not doing it right. And I thought Ebonics died 30 years ago.
