Russell T Davies has been doing a lot of spin control on the subject of ratings. So naturally, when the subject of renewal comes up, he'd do it even more.
"It’s an industry decision, it's like any business – these things take time," RTD told SFX magazine.
Don't hit series usually get the news they're coming back pretty quickly? No one was left wondering whether Stranger Things would be back after the last season. House of the Dragon was pretty quick to let everyone know they were going back to film another season, too.
If Disney is quick to pull the plug on their own shows like Willow and The Acolyte, what's their incentive to pay for more Doctor Who, a show where they don't own the rights?

If Disney cared about their bottomline, RTD's not going to get a 3rd season. Or at least, he and Ncuti Gatwa will get replaced.
Except Disney has shown that they're not always quick on the uptake when it comes to a lot of their shows like some of the MCU series. Also, what if they're locked into a multi season contract?

Usually, when they cancel something, they do it quietly, like in the case of "She-Hulk" and "Kenobi". They were pretty loud about the cancelation of "The Acolyte, a show universally reviled outside of a small segment of blue-haired weirdos. It made me wonder if Disney isn't starting to care about money again.
I'd be interested in knowing what sort of contract RTD got. Right now, the only thing that seems certain are the first two seasons thar were filmed back to back.

BBC's every bit as cutthroat as Disney, so if Disney got locked into a contract, it's probably because of BBC.
It's really pretty stupid on Disney's part, getting the new Who series but not licensing the nuWho series. That could have given them a lot of streams and somewhat masked the unpopularity of the latest season (the specials with Tennant in it got a lot of streams because people still like Tennant.)
But I guess it's BBC (or the current people in charge of the franchise) that didn't want the previous seasons to run in tandem with the latest, because the tennant/smith/eccleston/capaldi seasons getting lots of streams while the gatwa episodes get ignored will look bad for them.

I was surprised they didn't license the older nuWho. It would have given new viewers more incentive to watch if they could catch up on the lore. But the Gatwa stuff would look pretty dumbed down in comparison.

they can't cancel stuff quietly anymore because the actresses freak out and go on social media! "it's toxic fandom! everybody loves my show but won't watch it! there's a hidden fanbase! male jerks, watch my damn show!"
cause they don't wanna go back to doing porn. time to thaw out walt! they can probably cure whatever was wrong with him by now. probably hardening of the arteries like my granny had! it makes you see shit
here's walt fighting off mutants
