i have had several issues of this before, but currently only have one. the book was drawn by michael william kaluta (wow!) in the beginning, but the one i have was written by bill kunkel, joyce katz, and roger McKenzie (that's a lot of writers!) with art by rick estrada, who i generally like, and romeo tangal, who I thought was a fantastic inker! anyway, didn't the character madame xanadu eventually become the most powerful character in all of DC continuity? she goes blind, kills the phantom stranger and the specter, steals superman's baby, marries batman, .... no too much. but in the book I got, she's just a durn tarot card reader! that's all! not sure how she got so powerful later on

Was she the narrator of this? I didn't know she was in anything before her own book.

Yeah, this was where she debuted, and she was essentially a horror host, though she took a greater role in her stories instead of just being the narrator. She later got more invested with the DC Universe continuity when she became the Spectre's girlfriend in the late '80s Spectre series.
The Wikipedia article says she was based on the unnamed horror host from Forbidden Tales of Dark Mansion, who was later reintroduced in the 1990s in James Robinson's Starman series and given the name of Charity.
I had no idea that she was more recently connected to the Arthurian myths. There was absolutely no indication of that in any of her previous stories.

thanks doc! and in the ones i've had there's one continual story with a single writer/artist team. probably why I've never really seeked them out. I like the old anthology (or portmanteau if you will!) system, with 3 or more stories, and different writers & artists. they're like opening a box of shock-lets! you never know what yer gonna git! i'm very sorry. stole that one from an old 'tales from the crypt'
(FAKE GUMP VOICE) "LIFE IS LIKE A BOX OF SHOCK-OLATES ...! "

My only experience with Madame Xanadu was the old one-shot she had. I never knew she was a horror hostess.
I was surprised to see she had what looks likea pretty long running Vertigo title, too.

I didn't know she was the Elvira-esque host of a book back in the day.
The recent Madame Xanadu series was deeply disappointing.
