Hawkman, Backup Superhero

I always maintained the most useless superhero was the Atom. I wanted someone to squish him for decades.

I find it interesting that DC thought their weak characters could be compensated for by making them tough:

a.  Aquaman lost a hand and suddenly became Chuck Norris.

b. Hawkman became Wolverine - "oh, fire just tickles HIM."

c. I think in one early issue of yet another Atom series Batman says he forgets how strong the Atom is when the Atom kicks out a car wheel.

d. When the novelty of Firestorm's powers and teen angst lost their lustre and lead to poor sales, they fused him with a Russian and made him the aloof and tough Fire Elemental.

e. Elongated Man's wife gets raped and later murdered. I'm glad they didn't bring him back with an eye patch, a shoulder-mounted cannon, and a bad attitude.
