I just saw this. The recent CG film, not the old anime. I'm not familiar with the old anime so I have no idea if this is a poor adaptation or no, but even without any background the CG film kicks all sorts of ass. If you like the Time War parts of Doctor Who and the Dark Knight Rises, you need to watch this. Lotsa cool space battles too. I love the way they managed to make the Arcadia the spaceship equivalent of a ghost pirate ship, without going into mystical/paranormal territory.
The CG is also decent. You still get the uncanny valley, but it's miles above Final Fantasy: Spirits Within and slightly better than Advent Children. Sound is awesome, and I regret not being able to see this in a theatre.
