When one exits the boundaries of New York City to the north of the Bronx and heads into Westchester County , one can stay in the confines of the older suburbs of Yonkers and ( " Money Earnin' ! " ) Mount Vernon , or , proceed to the Northeast , through the moneyed enclaves of New Rochelle , Rye ( John and Martha Mitchell's former home place and site of the Rye Playland amusement park , briefly managed by Marriot in the early Eighties until they made the mistake of charging for re-entry and not allowing outside food , after which the county , reluctantly , resumed management of the park , a socialistic fillip seeming running counter to the Repuplican inclination of the county , especially this portion , but there you have it . ) , and Port Chester , or even proceed out-of-state , into the " Cheever Country " confines of Westport and Darien , in Conneticut ( Or , the slightly more wry Peter DeVries viewpoint may appeal more . ) -
Or , if one holds to a course paralell , or at least closer , to the Hudson , one may proceed past Dobbs Ferry , bypassing Tuckahoe along the way , past the county seat White Plains and points north , through the vaguely Sears-Roebuck-level Northern Westchester areas , past the Valhalla Dam and man-made lakes containing large portions of New York City's water supply , Croton-On-Hudson , Crugers , and here you are coming to where the " upstate " , and less " suburb " , becomes applicable , though some may nominate Poughkeepsie , or , possibly , Peekskill , for the post of " border city " . The Jefferson Valley Mall , large by East Coast standards , lies , roughly , about here , and , it is here , on a crisp late September/early October-style crispish afternoon , with yellowing leaves preparing to leap off of the trees , made bizarre only by the fact that it is mid-July , that we find Tulsa Coyle , Eric Redd , and Candy Orr , the three free-lance law-enforcement agents collectively known as thw Vengance Squad , about a mile and a half away , in a malfunctioning Humvee , approaching the Jefferson Valley Mall .
