This is probably just me, but I've always found it hard to like when an established character is played in a movie by a really famous celebrity. Not necessarily an A-lister, but someone famous enough that they've sort of become larger than life - you find it hard to get into the character because you keep seeing it as just an actor wearing a costume or playing a part. For instance, I can't enjoy Tom Cruise's action roles without being distracted that it's a freaking 5 and a half foot scientologist sprinting and punching terrorists in the face. Same goes for Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft, or every time they namedrop Johnny Depp for a comic book movie.
Still, there are those who managed to do well playing established characters. I riffed on Tom Cruise above but I find his portrayal of Lestat in the Vampire Chronicles really effective. Downey isn't really an A-lister before Iron Man, but he's recognizable enough (as a rom-com actor, at that.) But when IM 1 rolled along, he became THE Tony Stark and made the movie version of the character more popular with fans than the comic book version. Oh, and Hugh Jackman did the same thing for Wolverine a few years before. Nic Cage gets flak for most of his recent roles, but his Big Daddy was awesome (even though it was a departure from the comic book version.)
Any others?

lol!! i know what you're talking about. they sometimes BULGE out of the movie instead just being a part of it. they carry a certain baggage. keanu reeves as constantine? ugg. christian bale as john connor in terminator didn't work for me either. i kept expecting the batman voice to come out. nick cage was great in kickass! but in ghost rider -- with the motorcycle, glue-on hair and leather jacket he looked exactly like nick cage going thru a mid-life crisis

I agree. It's better to have unknowns for iconic roles so that they don't overshadow the characters they're portraying.
MH, I'm sure you'll agree that this is the biggest hurdle Ben Affleck will be facing when he plays Batman.
