More Doctor Who is on the way. The BBC just announced a Doctor Who spinoff will being filming next Spring and premiere sometime next year. Entitled Class, the show is being billed as "YA series" from young adult author Patrick Ness, will be set in modern-day London. Ness's work includes A Monster Calls and the Chaos Walking trilogy.
Beyond the spinoff designation, Class's connection to Doctor Who isn't clear. Past Doctor Who spinoffs, including Torchwood and Sarah Jane Adventures, exist in the Doctor Who universe but rarely do the titular show's cast show up elsewhere.
Said Ness in a press release, "I can't wait for people to meet the heroes of Class, to meet the all-new villains and aliens, to remember that the horrors of the darkest corners of existence are just about on par with having to pass your A-Levels." Added Doctor Who and Sherlock showrunner Steven Moffat, who will executive produce the eight-episode series, "This is like growing up in modern Britain — but with monsters!"
Series 9 of Doctor Who — the second starring Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor — premiered last month for both UK and US audiences. Most importantly, at some this series, Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams will guest star.
