Houston restaurant hands out "rule cards" for kids
HOUSTON, TX - A restaurant in Houston is getting a lot of attention, but not because of its food.
The Mexican eatery is handing out rules cards to parents who come in with young children, reports KTRK-TV in Houston.
The restaurant owners say they were fed up after some parents let their kids run around unattended.
For long-time couple Ana Beaven and Charlie McDaniel, "Cuchara" is their baby.
"This is our second home," says Beaven.
They've invested three years into their Mexican restaurant, and most of the art here is from Mexico.
"They are almost impossible to replace."
They open their doors to everyone, but parents are getting a warning.
"Just take responsibility for your kids," says McDaniel.
The couple says after many incidents at the restaurant, they decided to print cards with a list of rules and hand them out to parents.
"The child jump (sic) on top of the chair and then started going up," said Beaven.
McDaniel added, "A child took a coin, a quarter and began marking and drew tic tac toe."
That incident, she says, was the last straw. The child caused $1,500 worth of damage.
"We had already warned them a few times not to let him run unsupervised."
The mother, they say, didn't want to take responsibility, but eventually agreed to pay $40 for the paint.
"Of course we got bad reviews on social media from her," says McDaniel.
That's okay they say, they understand not everyone will like it.
Beaven adds, "The main goal is for parent to understand how fragile our items are."
And they're also doing it for everyone's safety.
"Please bring your children to the restaurant but have them behave when they are here."
The couple says they have received some negative feedback from parents who didn't like being told their children were unruly, still they say they will continue handing out the cards.
